I don’t know about you, but I’ve been craving comfort food lately. And French toast makes the perfect healthy breakfast that is easy to prepare! How to make French toast? Let me walk you through the tools and ingredients you’ll need.
The bread: It all starts with some good bread. I mean really good bread. We’re talking about thick slices of hearty sourdough bread. That is really the best choice in my opinion, but if you’re gluten free you can also use a gluten free variety. Just make sure it’s sturdy enough to be able to dip in the batter and not fall apart!
Milk: I used almond milk in this recipe but you can substitute other milk of your choice. Just don’t use anything too thin like rice milk for best results.
Eggs: For many years I didn’t use eggs in my recipes, but lately I’ve enjoyed adding them back in. I do recommend only using the best quality available, from pasture-raised chickens.
Frying oil: Be sure to use a healthy oil that can withstand higher temperatures you need for frying. I like to use either avocado oil or coconut oil for this.
Flavor additions: The vanilla and cinnamon add just the right touch of sweetness and spice. Feel free to add more than I call for, and you can also use pumpkin pie spice for fun, especially if making this in the fall.
Salt: Just a touch of natural sea salt balances the flavor of this recipe. It also adds beneficial minerals to the recipe.
Toppings: Choose pure maple syrup for a nice touch on the finished toast, along with some powdered sugar for a pretty touch. Feel free to also top it off with berries for color.

Fluffy sourdough French toast is a delicious breakfast treat any morning.
- 5 – 6 slices sourdough bread, cut 3/4 inch thick
- 2 pasture-raised eggs
- 1/4 cup almond milk
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp vanilla
- Pinch of sea salt
- Avocado oil
- Maple Syrup
Optional: Powdered sugar
In a bowl, combine the eggs, almond milk, cinnamon, vanilla and sea salt. Whisk until fully combined.
Dip your bread slices thoroughly in the mixture until it is coated well. Heat a cast iron or nonstick skillet on medium heat, brush with your choice of high heat oil.
Fry 3 to 4 slices on your skillet at a time for a couple of minutes on each side, until golden brown. Top with maple syrup, and sprinkle with optional powdered sugar. Now it’s ready to serve!
